二氯化二硫是一種黃紅色液體，有刺激性、窒息性惡臭，在空氣中強烈發煙。遇水分解為硫、二氧化硫、氯化氫。熔點－80℃，沸點135.6℃，密度1.678克/厘米3；加熱300℃以上時分解為硫和氯。它易水解：

2S2Cl2+2H2O─→SO2+4HCl+3S

將干燥的氯氣通入熔化的硫，主要生成二氯化二硫。二氯化二硫可做硫、碘和某些有機化合物及金屬化合物的溶劑，也可做橡膠硫化劑。
